Minnesota State University, Mankato, also referred to as simply MSU, is a public four-year university located in Mankato, which is the county seat of Blue Earth County, also stretching into Nicollet, and Le Sueur counties, being situated in the US state of Minnesota, having a population estimated at a number of more than 36 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which makes it the fourth largest city outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
MSU was established in 1867, and it is the first public college in USA to be headed by a woman, suffragette Julia Sears, in 1872. Since its founding, the institution has been renamed several times, to better reflect its growing mission: Mankato Normal School 1867 - 1921, Mankato State Teachers College 1921 - 1957, Mankato State College 1957 - 1975, Mankato State University 1975 - 1999, followed by the institution's current name, which was adopted in 1999.
Currently, MSU has a total enrollment of more than 16 000 students, and offers 58 undergraduate programs of study, including 16 preprofessional programs, and 82 graduate programs, through 6 colleges, which are: Allied Health and Nursing, Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Science, Engineering and Technology, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Minnesota State - Mankato's athletic teams are known as the Minnesota State Mavericks, who compete in 11 men's 12 women's varsity sports, in NCAA Division II, including in Division I WCHA, for men's and women's ice hockey. Their distinctive colors are purple and gold, and their mascot is Stomper.
